Choosing between China and Japan works better as an exercise in trip design than a contest between countries. Both support city, food, history and countryside travel. The useful question is which combination you can enjoy within your available days, confidence with independent travel and appetite for moving between regions.
Start with three experiences
Write down three moments you would regret missing. These might be walking an imperial palace, spending time in a neighborhood food market or sleeping in a small countryside inn. Then build one plausible route in each country around those moments. Compare the actual routes rather than a collection of national highlights gathered from photographs.
Count transitions honestly
A flight or train ride takes more than the advertised journey time. Hotel checkout, station access, luggage and finding your next room all occupy energy. For a first China trip, Beijing and Xi’an can provide a coherent history-focused journey. For a Japan alternative, investigate a similarly compact two-base route rather than assuming you should cross the country. Check current transport and booking arrangements before deciding.
Compare equivalent budgets
Put the same room standard, guide hours and cancellation flexibility into both estimates. A self-directed trip in one country cannot fairly be compared with a fully guided luxury package in the other. Include the preparation time you enjoy doing yourself and the tasks you prefer someone else to handle. Choose the route whose ordinary days appeal to you, not simply the destination with the longest list of famous sights.
